Basic care tips for your handcrafted leather goods from Dodson Designs.
Leather is just like your skin. So treat it accordingly.
General Cleaning:
- If the leather gets wet, gently blot or wipe off the moisture. Do not rub the leather.
- If it does get wet, it’s okay. Allow it to dry naturally away from heat sources.
- Keep leather out of direct sunlight. It can dry it out and also affect the color.
- If it gets dirty, clean it with a damp cloth (use a mild soap ONLY if needed).
- Wipe down weekly with a barely damp cloth (NO SOAP)
Semi-Annual / Spot Cleaning:
- Use a moisturizing soap made for the type of leather you want to protect.
- Add cleaner/soap to a damp microfiber cloth—not directly on the leather.
- Apply cleaner in small circular motions one section at a time.
- Remove any excess moisture (wipe in the direction of the leather grain) with a 2nd damp cloth if needed.
- Allow the leather to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight.
Conditioning Like your skin, leather can get dry.
- Moisturize it with a leather conditioner or 100% neats foot oil.
- Apply a small amount of conditioner/oil on a cloth and apply gently in small circles.
- Any conditioner applied should be done in very small quantities. Leather will darken over time – It’s natural.
- Normal leather should only need to be once a year. Leather exposed to the sun often can be conditioned quarterly.
